6 Tips for Cooking Okra That’s Not Slimy

July 15, 2024

We all know okra is naturally a bit slimy, but we have 6 tips for picking and cooking okra that’s, well… not  😊

  1. Choose small, fresh pods – the smaller the pod the less slime and seeds!
  2. Use high heat – the longer okra cooks, the slimier it gets.
  3. Dry them well – wet pods will start to steam, creating more slime.
  4. Cook in small batches – don’t overcrowd your skillet/baking sheet.
  5. Add Acid – lemon juice, chopped tomatoes, or vinegar will add more flavor and lessen the amount of slime.
  6. Cut in larger pieces – lots of small cuts release more slime, the bigger the pieces, the less slime you’ll have.
