The Difference Between a Cucumber and Zucchini

August 8, 2023

Ever bought a zucchini when you really wanted a cucumber? It happens to the best of us. Here’s how to tell them apart:

Color:

Cucumbers can range from yellow-green to dark green but often have waxy, bumpy skin.

The skin of zucchini is usually lightly or heavily speckled. Zucchini skin can also be striped or ridged but generally feels more textured than a cucumber.

P.S. One major difference is that harvested zucchini still has a short stem attached when it is sold at the store.

Taste:

Cucumber has a crisp, watery texture, and usually has prominent seeds, and bitter skin.

Zucchinis have a dense, slightly spongy texture, and less prominent seeds when harvested young. The flavor is very mild and can range from a bit grassy to slightly sweet.
