Rinse the outside of the watermelon before cutting into the melon with cool, running water. No soap or scrub brushes are necessary.
Even though you do not eat the rind of a watermelon, it is still important that you properly wash it before you cut it. A knife or peeler passing through the rind can carry pathogens from the outside into the flesh of the melon.
